Ingredientes gin

How ingredients make gin special

The quality of the gin you drink is directly related to the quality of the ingredients used as raw materials in the recipe.

Of Dutch origin, gin is characterized by the predominance of the peculiar flavor of juniper. But it is its combination with other botanicals, ingredients such as herbs and spices that will distinguish each recipe, according to the quality and concentration of each of them.

It is these botanicals that make gin a very special and appreciated drink. Much more aromatic thanother distillates, gin has won the hearts of fans of drinks and distillates in Brazil and around the world. It is versatile, light and aromatic, allowing combinations with many ingredients, creating interesting and tasty drinks.

London Dry Gin

London Dry is the most consumed and well-known type of gin in the world. Despite carrying the name London, it can be made anywhere in the world, respecting the characteristics of containing grain alcohol, junipers and aromatic herbs, in a distilled drink.

As with other spirits, the water used in the production of gin also influences the flavor of the finished drink. Kalvelage London Dry Gin is produced with the purest and most crystalline water from the European Valley, in Santa Catarina, resulting in a light and tasty distillate.

Juniper

Juniper is the heart of gin. It is a medicinal plant, also known as cedar or juniper, therefore an ingredient in the original Dutch recipe, developed as a medicine for the kidneys.

It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, sedative, hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, analgesic, diuretic and digestive properties. But more than that, juniper is the ingredient that gives gin its characteristic flavor.

Cardamom

Another member of Kalvelage gin is cardamom, a pod of Indian origin with a flavor and aroma similar to ginger. Its seeds are sweet and highly appreciated in gastronomy to flavor various recipes. It pairs very well with citrus fruits, such as orange peels, which are also an ingredient in our London Dry Gin.

Coriander

Coriander is a very common ingredient in Brazilian cuisine, although it is not unanimous among the population. Coriander gives London Dry Gin Kalvelage a fragrant and slightly spicy flavor.

Diferenças gin e vodka

Know the differences between gin and vodka

Two of the world’s main drinks, gin and vodka, are a constant presence on bar and restaurant tables. Much appreciated by cocktail lovers, these spirits often confuse those who are not used to drinking or preparing drinks.

The fact that both are distilled beverages is the main reason for the confusion. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. In reality, vodka and gin are very different drinks, starting with their names.

The word “vodka” derives from the word voda, which means water in Slavic languages. In practice, it is like a diminutive (aguinha). The word “gin” originates from the name of one of the distillate’s ingredients, juniper. As we already mentioned in this post, the name “gin” originated from the combination of variants of the name of juniper, which in Dutch isgenever, genievre in French and ginepro in Italian.

Another point of divergence between drinks is their origin. Gin was created as a medicine for kidney problems in the mid-17th century by a doctor and professor named Francisco de la Boie. Vodka, in turn, emerged in Russia in the 14th century, being perfected and reaching the alcohol content we know today only at the end of the 19th century.

Biggest differences between vodka and gin

Although name and origin are relevant facts to differentiate these distillates, there are other points of greater emphasis, starting with the taste of the two drinks. If you’ve already drunk both, you may have noticed that vodka is a purer distillate, with a neutral flavor, while gin contains many aromatic herbs. Therefore, its flavor varies according to the ingredients used, and may be more citrusy, more aromatic or more herbal.

This difference between gin and vodka is what defines how the drinks will be used in cocktails. As vodka is a neutral distillate, it is used to highlight the flavor of other ingredients in a drink, and not to be the main point. This makes it very versatile, being able to be used in the most diverse drinks.

Gin and vodka
Despite being distilled, gin and vodka are very different from each other.

Gin, in turn, is a more prominent drink. Therefore, it must be combined with ingredients that do not alter its flavor. The choice of the type of gin to be used in a drink depends on the combination of ingredients in the drink, and not the other way around.

It sounds complicated, but it’s quite simple to remember. Gin needs to be striking, both in its flavor and aroma, while vodka must be like water, with a pure flavor and smooth aroma.

To finalize the differences, we have the way of drinking. Vodka is a much appreciated drink in pure shot form, although it is also consumed in drinks. Gin is mostly part of drinks.

Now that you know the differences between gin and vodka, how about trying Kalvelage spirits? We have three different types of vodkas: Kalvelage Vodka, a super premium spirit perfect for drinking neat; Kalvelage Vibe Vodka, perfect for cocktails; and Kalvelage Oak Vodka, the only one made with oak extract in Brazil. In addition, we also have Kalvelage London Dry Gin, an authentic London Dry produced with 100% national ingredients.

Nothing better than tasting to differentiate, agree? Therefore, we have separated two recipes, one with vodka and one with gin for you to enjoy!

Everything you need to know about gin

Gin is a much appreciated drink around the world, both for its perfumed aroma and its lightness. Its flavor makes it possible to combine it in different drinks, which has made gin the drink of the moment. To understand its success, we must first look at its history.

The drink was created in Holland, in the mid-17th century, by the doctor and professor Francisco de la Boie. That’s right, a doctor! Gin was created as a medicine to alleviate kidney problems. During his research, de la Boie mixed juniper with cereal distillate, and this diuretic medicine later became known by the name gin. However, what he didn’t expect was that it would be used by those who were not sick.

Tasty, light and cheap, the medicine soon became popular with English soldiers who fought during the 30 Years’ War (1618 – 1648), giving them courage and keeping away the cold in the midst of the harsh European winter

After the war, the English took the aromatic distillate to their country, where it became popular. Due to the creation of Coffey’s continuous still, gin began to be produced on a large scale in the country, and soon this distillate became cheaper than beer.

Also known as juniper distillate, gin has unique characteristics in its composition, and also varied styles, such as London Dry, Plymouth, Old Tom and Navy Strength.

The name Gin originated from the combination of variants of the name of juniper, which in Dutch is genever, genievre in French and ginepro in Italian. Today, the Tuscany region of Italy is the main producer of juniper.

The aroma of the gin is another important point, which differentiates this drink from other spirits. Gin has a lot to do with perfumes. Both use many aromatic herbs, such as angelica, lily roots and licorice, among their ingredients.

Gin sophistication

Recently, gin has returned with full force, and much of this is due to the diversity of combinations and its various harmonizations.

Gin was very successful during the 80s, but between the 90s and 2000s, consumers embraced ready-made drinks, causing it to be forgotten again.

However, in 2007, some renowned European chefs reported that after long days of work in the hot kitchens of their restaurants, they cooled down with glasses of gin and tonic over ice. Many of them created new quick drink recipes and developed the perfect way to enjoy the drink, bringing gin back from its sabbatical. Preparing a good drink with gin has become a personalized experience.

It is essential to prepare your drink in a gin glass, because the material of the glass influences the temperature of the drink. The glass keeps the drink fresh and does not transfer heat from your hands to the drink, keeping it refreshing until the end. Likewise, finding the ideal pairing, whether with tonic or other spices, is important to have the best experience possible.

If you’ve never tried a drink with genuinely Brazilian gin, get to know Kalvelage London Dry Gin, a sugar-free and gluten-free drink, made with 100% national cereals and awarded worldwide. Kalvelage London Dry Gin is produced in the European Valley, in Santa Catarina, and has eight aromatic herbs in its composition: juniper, cardamom, coriander, roses, angelica, citron, orange peel and melissa. How international drinking contests work

For beverage producers, international competitions are a way to demonstrate to everyone the quality of their products. With strict rules, only the best win. And if a drink has won an award, consumers can be sure that they are purchasing a really good product.

There are several international competitions that reward the best drinks, such as the Singapore World Spirits Competition, San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition, among others. In all of them, drinks are separated into different distillates, such as vodka, whiskey, rum, gin, among others, in addition to the wine category. Each category has specific rules and documentation. It is worth mentioning that there are no competitions of this type in Brazil.

During the competitions, the judges evaluate samples of each drink in a blind test, thus ensuring the equality of the process. While tasting the samples, the judges give each one a rating individually, without comparing it to the other drinks in the competition. At this stage, each judge evaluates specific aspects of the drinks, such as aroma, flavor, appearance and aftertaste. Notes are compared, and the best-rated drinks go to a final trial, where the best of the best is chosen, according to the rules of each competition.

To break the prejudice that only imported spirits are of quality, Kalvelage has been sending its products to different competitions since 2014, and has received 21 medals in total. Most of the awards took place at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition, in different years, proving that the quality of Kalvelage products was not a mere coincidence.

In 2014, Kalvelage Vodka received a silver medal at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition. The following year, in this same tournament, he received bronze, and in 2016 he won silver again.

Vodka Kalvelage OAK

Kalvelage Oak Vodka received bronze at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition in 2019, and has won silver for three consecutive years at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition: 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Vodka Kalvelage Vibe

With great international prominence, Kalvelage Vibe Vodka won a medal for the first time in 2016, with silver at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition. The following year, in San Francisco, he won a bronze medal. Back in Hong Kong in 2018, Kalvelage Vibe Vodka won the gold medal. Finally, in 2019, came the bronze medal. Again at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, there were three more medals: bronze in 2019, silver in 2020, and another gold in 2021.

Kalvelage London Dry Gin

Like vodkas, Kalvelage gin also won awards in international competitions. As it is a more recently developed product, it participated in fewer competitions, but did not fall short in any of them: it received a bronze in 2020 and a gold in 2021, both at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

In all the competitions it participated in, Kalvelage proved its quality, and brought more than 20 medals to Brazil. Winning medals in consecutive years proves that the level of products does not decline even with an increase in production. The pioneering spirit of Kalvelage Distillery, combined with the use of national ingredients, shows that the country can also be an excellent producer of vodkas and gins, contrary to what many imagined.
